New York September 17: Under fire at home and abroad for his recent remarks that a lot of Pakistani women were 'willing to get raped' in order to go abroad, President Pervez Musharraf said he never made the comments and they were 'totally incorrect'.

He told a gathering of American and Pakistani journalists during an interaction that he never uttered such remarks during his interview to the Washington Post.

On the contrary, he claimed that he had brought in a series of reforms to empower women and give them due respect and dignity, Pakistan's state run APP news agency reported.

Musharraf said the Canadian Prime Minister talked to him about the issue when he met him on the sidelines of UN General Assembly during which he clarified that the remarks were wrongly attributed to him.

Describing violence against women as a 'global malaise', he said Pakistan should not be singled out on this count.

His press secretary and defence spokesman Maj Gen Shaukat Sultan also strongly refuted the remarks attributed to Musharraf.

"Women have been empowered through the local government system and they also have an unprecedented representation in the National Assembly," he said.
