Bangalore, January 28: Ending the political uncertainty, Karnataka Chief Minister N Dharam Singh resigned on Saturday after Governor T N Chaturvedi asked him to put in his papers within an hour, making it clear to him that he could not grant him any more time to prove his majority. The Governor has also invited Kumaraswamy of the JD(S) to form the government in coalition with the BJP.
Ten days after his government was brought to a precipice by the revolt of JD(S) leader Deve Gowda's son Kumaraswamy, Singh met the governor at noon and shortly later sent his resignation saying he would not like to "cling to the chair".
A day after the Assembly was adjourned sine die after he refused to move his motion of confidence and failed to pass the floor test as directed by the governor, Singh sought more time but Chaturvedi was in no mood to oblige, leaving him with no other option but to resign.
Before sending his resignation, Singh told reporters he sought "one more opportunity" but the governor cited "technical reasons" for his inability to do so and then he told him that he would resign within an hour.
"I am not a person who will cling to power. Considering the totality of circumstances and with the governor pleading inability to grant more time, I have decided to resign," said Singh, who looked relaxed after facing political turbulence for the last 10 days.
