New Delhi, May 8: On April 20th Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had replied to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s letter that all matters relating to free trade agreements (FTA) are being taken into consideration. He assured her that the geo-political economic interest would be given adequate attention.
Sonia Gandhi had reportedly written a letter to the Prime Minister, expressing serious concern over the government’s decision to liberalise the FTA policy and it would add more problems for the farmers.
The Prime Minister's Trade and Economic Relations Committee (TERC) had also met on May 3 to discuss the current status of negotiations for India-Asean FTA.
Subsequently Manmohan Singh addressed the Asian Development Bank officials on May 5.
In his reply to Sonia Gandhi the PM also stressed that the FTA experience across the glob has been “very good” and well received.
The Prime Minister has also said that the government was always careful in the case of agriculture and had often placed quantitative restrictions to protect the interests of Indian farmers with consultations being held in advance with stakeholders.
