Quota New Delhi, November 30: A Parl Committee has strongly opposed the govt's stand that job quotas for SCs and STs cannot be implemented in the private sector or divested PSUs and recommended the enactment of a law to achieve the objective.

Noting the government's contention that reservation provisions could not be enforced if public sector share in a PSU went below 51 per cent, the Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Tribes said this was the prime reason for which a law has to be enacted to achieve the purpose.

"These are the very reasons which make the Committee firm in their view that the hour has come to enact a law for reservation in private sector so that the interests of SCs and STs are safeguarded while simultaneously the state makes progress economically," it said in its latest report tabled in Parliament.

While privatisation of economy has given momentum to economic development, "the government can in no way leave the SC and ST communities to fend for themselves", the committee, headed by Ratilal Kalildas Varma, said, asserting that affirmative action has to be taken to protect the interests of these downtrodden sections of people.
