Nine jawans killed in Kuki ambush

IMPHAL: At least nine Manipur Rifles jawans and a civilian were killed in an ambush by armed Kuki militants at Mongyang in Senapati district, and all police and security posts throughtout Manipur have been put on maximum alert following the incident. The Ninth Manipur Rifles battalion jawans escorting passenger buses coming from different places, including Guwahati and Dimapur to Imphal, were attacked by about 35 armed Kuki militants.

PF contribution

NEW DELHI: The rate of contribution to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) in all industries and establishments has been increased from 8.33 per cent to 10 per cent for both employers and employees from Monday. The government had issued the notification on April 9e to give effect to it from May 1, 1997. Immolation bid

NEW DELHI: `May Day' celebrations in the capital were marred Monday when a worker attempted self immolation, protesting against non-receipt of salary for six months. The immolation bid, at a rally near Parliament House, sparked off violence.
