Toshiba scouts for partner

NEW DELHI, May 2: Ruling out any possibility of setting up a cent per cent
subsidy in India now, Toshiba Corporation is scouting for a partner for
technology transfer in medical equipment business, broadcasting equipment,
and a joint venture partner in the software business in India.
At present the company's thrust is on the medical equipment. According to
Hiroaki Antoku, general manager, Toshiba corporation, ``We are one among the
top three leading manufacturers of medical equipment in the world, and now
want to explore the Indian market in this area.''
The company has been eagerly waiting for the health insurance sector to
liberalise but since that is not happening immediately, they are planning to
introduce their technology as soon as possible.
The company is also exploring the possibility for stepping in the software
business. At present, the company is procuring software at one-third of the
prevalent price in Japan from HCL, Wipro, PCL and exporting it to Japan.
With the likely technology transfer in this sector, the company is eyeing
India as a major export base.
