Global Sport -- Pakistan team for I Cup

KARACHI, May 2: Pakistan today announced a 14-member squad led by Rameez Raja to take part in a four-nation cricket tournament in India this month.

The Pakistanis will leave for India on Monday to take part in the tournament which includes New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the host and is due to start on May 9.

The team: Rameez Raja (captain), Saeed Anwar (vice-captain), Salim Malik, Inzamam-ul Haq, Ijaz Ahmed, Mohammad Waseem, Hasan Reza, Moin Khan (wicket-keeper), Saqlain Mushtaq, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Aaqib Javed, Azher Mehmoud and Mohammad Hussain.

Sri Lanka name squad of 14

COLOMBO: Dulip Liyanage, who last played during a tour to India in 1994 before sustaining an injury, was included in Sri Lanka's 14-member squad, for the Independence Cup in India.

The squad: Arjuna Ranatunga (captain), Aravinda de Silva (vice-captain), Sanath Jayasuriya, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Roshan Mahanama, Chaminda Vaas, Muthiah Muralitharan, Marvan Atapattu, Hashan Tillekaratne, Kumar Dharmasena, Ruwan Kalpage, Upul Chandana, Dulip Liyanage and Sanjeeva de Silva.

Rookie replaces Simon Doull

WELLINGTON: Rookie left-arm fast-medium bowler Shayne O'Connor was called into the New Zealand squad today for the Independence Cup, replacing the injured Simon Doull.

Doull, New Zealand's senior strike bowler, was forced out of the tour by a stress fracture in his back. O'Connor, 23, joins Heath Davis and Andrew Penn in the 14-strong squad as New Zealand's three-pronged fast-medium attack for the tournament.

Hendry takes 5-3 lead over Wattana

SHEFFIELD: Title-holder Stephen Hendry was leading 5-3 against Thailand's James Wattana after the first day's play yesterday of their World Snooker Championship semifinal.

Wattana went ahead 2-0 but scotland's hendry came storming back to lead 5-2 before Wattana took the final frame of the session 74-38.

In the other semi-final, Irishman Ken Doherty compiled his highest break of the session, a 75 in the final frame, to draw level at 4-4 with Alain Robidoux of Canada.

Three Indians in Rest of the World

HONG KONG: India's Vinod Kambli and Sanjay Manjrekar, along with promising youngster Rohan Gavaskar, will feature in the Rest of the World XI team to take on Australia in a one-dayer here on May 11.

South Africans Lance Klusener and Shaun Pollock will also feature in the one-day game at the tiny Kowloon Cricket Ground.

Beyond Borg leaves Swedes agog

STOCKHOLM: Tennis legend Bjorn Borg returned to the tennis courts in Sweden, not to play but to watch his 11-year-old son Robin compete in his first tennis tournament.

Robin Borg, who plays for the KLTK Tennis Club in Stockholm, was closely watched by the Swedish press, eager to see if he had inherited his father's talent. But Robin, who says he plays his ``own game'', lost a disappointing 1-6, 1-6 yesterday.
