Michael Stich to quit in Sept

HAMBURG, May 2: Former Wimbledon champion Michael Stich said today he will end his professional career at the end of this summer because of injury problems. His last appearance will be in Germany's Davis Cup tie against Mexico from September 19-21.

The 28-year-old Stich, whose career on the pro circuit spanned a decade, played in the shadow of another German, Boris Becker.

But his greatest moment was in fact in a match against Becker -- in the final of the 1991 Wimbledon men's singles title when his victory in an all-German contest came as the culmination of a superb run which saw him beat Jim Courier and Stefan Edberg successively in earlier rounds.
