Pressure on Kesri to dump Vaghela govt

Angana Parekh

NEW DELHI, May 7: Pressure is building up on Congress president Sitaram Kesri to review his party's support to the minority Shankersinh Vaghela Government in Gujarat.

Following last night's recommendation of the Gujarat Congress Legislature Party (CLP) that the party's support to Vaghela be withdrawn, several MPs from the state met Kesri today and urged him to go by the state CLP's recommendation.

According to sources, they told Kesri that the party's position in Gujarat had become untenable: Congressmen could neither play the role of the Opposition nor could they support the Vaghela Government's policies. The party's prospects in the next elections would be seriously damaged, they said, and urged Kesri to think of the future.

Kesri is believed to have told them he was aware of the situation in Gujarat and that he would give the matter serious thought.

According to reports from Gandhinagar, the CLP leadership has decided to submit a report of the meeting to the party High Command soon. They would also come to Delhi to meet Kesri, they said.

Meanwhile, Vaghela today said there was no danger to his government as the Congress continued with its support.

Talking to reporters here, Vaghela said that he had spoken to GPCC president Prabodh Raval and the latter had assured him that the party was not considering withdrawal of support to his government.

Asked what would be his stand if the Congress, which has 45 members in the 182-member State Assembly, withdrew its support, he said ``I am not after power and I will not stay on in office for a second''.

On corruption charges levelled against his ministers, Vaghela said if the allegations were true, he would not keep the minister for a day in the Cabinet.

He said he had nominated two ministers -- Revenue Minister Atmaram Patel and Industries Minister Dilip Parikh, to look into such allegations made by the Congress leaders.

Asked about Congress joining the government, he said it was the Congress leaders who have to decide about it. Vaghela said he had asked leaders of the Rashtriya Janata Party not to enrol any Congressman into the party.
