Cholera strikes, monsoon to follow

MUMBAI, May 14: Even before the monsoon has set in, the first flush of water-borne diseases has hit the city. Three cases of cholera have appeared in the Kasturba municipal hospital.

The patients, all residents of Wadala's Sangam Nagar area, were admitted to KEM hospital in Parel on Monday night with complaints of vomiting and dysentery. They were put in the emergency ward and treated with intravenous fluid before being shifted to the Kasturba a day after the disease was detected as cholera. The names of the patients are Manoj Kumar Biswas (26), Ashok Shah (19) and Suresh (28). Pradnya Pai, dean of the KEM hospital, told Express Newsline cholera is a notifiable disease and needs utmost care and treatment. Patients are given antibiotics like tetracycline.
