Duty on 96 IT items to go

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU

NEW DELHI, May 14: Import duty on 96 information technology (IT) items are to be withdrawn by the year 2000.

Speaking to The Indian Express Shyamal Ghosh, secretary, Department of Electronics (DoE), said 96 out of 217 tariff lines are to be made import duty free within 3 years.

Ghosh stated that these 96 would mainly include equipment such as semi-conductors, chips, machineries for making chips, and, micro chips. These according to Ghosh would give a substantial boost to the domestic IT manufacturing industry.
