Gupta calls for revamp of NE security system
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, May 14: The Union home minsiter is revamping the security and intelligence systems in the noth-east, Home Minister Indrajit Gupta told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. ``The north-east problem has been going on for years and intelligence has not yet been able to develop a group which could understand the local languages,'' he said. The paramilitary forces as well as the Army were being given special training so that they would not violate human rights, hesaid. While not entertaining any talk of secession, the government is ready to meet militant outfits in the North-East as long as they were within the ambit of the Constitution, Gupta said.Replying to a discussion on the insurgency situation in the north east, Gupta said that the government would soon revamp the North Eastern Council (the coordinating nodal agency for the region) which, he said, was is in extremely bad shape.A long-term perspective to settle the problems of the region should not be through the barrel of a gun but through talks and negotiations with insurgents, he said.
