Patiala go down to AP -- Ensure a berth in the quarter-final
G S Mageshwaran
Bangalore, May 17: Suri Babu Bullareddy became the hero in Andhra's campaign
for the second successive time in the PSB 58th Senior National Hockey
Championship scoring the match winner with only a few moments left in the
game as his side overcame a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 over Patiala and
enhance their chances of entering the quarterfinals from Pool G of the PSB
58th Senior National hockey championship on Friday.
The win at the Sports Authority of India South Centre was Andhra's second,
which took them to the top of the four-team pool with six points. Delhi and
Gujarat share the second spot with three points each (one win, one loss) and
Patiala will head back home after having lost both their matches. Andhra
need only a draw from their last encounter against Gujarat scheduled on
Monday to make the last-eight grade.
In another rousing contest, in Pool C, Border Security Force were made to
sweat it out for their 5-3 win by Rajasthan.
Patiala, who lost to Gujarat in the tournament opener, were up 2-0 up within
20 minutes from the start. Dilbagh Singh converted a penalty corner to add
to the lead Deepak Sonkla had given in the 11th minute. But that was all
that went Patiala's way as the Andhra forwards returned after the break with
renewed vigour to not only to restore parity but also to snatch their second
win.
Nelson scored Andhra's first goal. Jeelani equalised the score by converting
a penalty stroke. Even as the spectators were resigning to a draw, Suri
sounded the boards for the matchwinner.
Border Security Force was another side, who were forced to understand the
importance of hard work before attaining victory. BSF, down 2-3 till an hour
into the game came back in an admirable manner to win their match 5-3
against Haryana.
BSF struggle: A lapse by Haryana goalkeeper Jagmohan Singh helped BSF take
the lead in the 26th minute. Jagmohan's poor clearance was trapped by a the
waiting Linus Tirkey, who nudged the ball home. Jagmohan was also guilty of
being indolent on atleast two other occasions, which resulted in goals for
BSF in the 60th and 65th minutes.
Incidentally, the two goals, both by Peter Tirkey were, what proved decisive
in the match as the former took the score to 3-3 and the latter gave the
winners the lead before Harbajan Singh rounded off the tally in the dying
moments of the match.
