Nagas kill 11 Kukis in a major strike

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

IMPHAL, May 17: In the ongoing ethnic feud between Nagas and Kukis, at least 11 people were killed by suspected Naga militants at a village in Manipur's Senapati district today.

Heavily-armed Naga militants attacked a truck carrying the Kukis at around 11.15 am, killing 11 people at Maohing village under Kangpopki police station, official sources said.

The Nagas set ablaze the truck carrying the villagers who were travelling from Chalwa village in Tamenglong district to Kangpokpi area. This was the most major strike by suspected Naga militants who had ambushed a bus near Kohima in Nagaland in December last year and killed about 30 Kukis. The Naga militants fled into the thick forests nearby after today's action, intelligence sources said.

Central and other security forces have launched a combing operation. Two Nepalis and one Meitei were also killed in the attack, sources said, adding this was the biggest killing of villagers in the fresh spurt of Kuki-Naga clashes this year.
