Mahesh Bhupathi creates Indian tennis history
Mahesh Bhupathi celebrated his 23rd birthday yesterday by becoming the first Indian ever to win a Grand Slam in the Open era, teaming up with Japan's Rika Hiraki to win the French Open mixed doubles. Bhupathi and Hiraki, seeded 16th, upset top-seeds Lisa Raymond and Patrick Galbraith of the United States 6-4, 6-1.

Court takes over polls for JD chief
All eyes are now on today's emergency session of the Janata Dal's national executive convened by party chief Laloo Prasad Yadav. Having received the High Court's go-ahead vacating the stay granted earlier in the day by a lower court, Laloo is likely to push through his plans of retaining the party presidentship in the meeting of the Dal's top decision-making body.

More than 37 die in Thanjavur temple fire

The subsidiary will be an independent company with its board of directors with sufficient representation from the STC.

VST faces liability for non-fulfilment of export obligation
VST Industries has estimated a liability of Rs 9.20 crore on account of non-fulfilment of export obligation under the export promotion capital goods (EPCG) scheme. The amount includes customs duty saved and interest on duty saved.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is to finalise shortly power purchase agreements (PPAs) with 11 promoters who have been given the letter of award for implementing the Tidco-promoted multi-fuel short-gestation power projects.

Service-tax norms for customs house agents announced
The Union government has issued guidelines for levy of service tax on custom house agents and steamer agents which will come into effect from June 15. The service tax will be levied at the rate of 5% on the gross service charge and will be collected and enforced by the central excise commissionerates within their jurisdiction.

Forum moots pan-regional airline
A pan-regional airline catering to the religious tourism circuit in India, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is the first of many joint initiatives which are to be undertaken by the four countries in coming months as part of an economic cooperation agreement signed in Bangkok yesterday.
