Jim Carrey bags MTV movie awards for The Cable Guy

REUTER

LOS ANGELES, June 8: The Cable Guy may have been a box office disappointment last year, but that did not stop its star, Jim Carrey, from picking up two trophies at the seventh annual MTV movie awards yesterday.

The rubber-faced comic was the only multiple winner at the irreverent ceremony, which included such categories as Best Kiss and Best Fight. The show, hosted by Mike Myers at the Barker Hangar in the Los Angeles suburb of Santa Monica, will be aired on June 12 on the music cable network.

Carrey's awards were for best villain and best comedy performance. However he missed out in the best fight category (where he was nominated with The Cable Guy co-star Matthew Broderick) to Fairuza Balk and Robin Tunney of the witchcraft horror movie, The Craft.

In the other categories: The teen slasher flick Scream won for best movie; Tom Cruise won best male performance for Jerry Maguire, while the female award went to Claire Danes of William Shakespeare's Romeo&Juliet.

Her co-star in that movie, Leonardo Dicaprio, went home empty-handed despite three nominations. Matthew Mcconaughey won the breakthrough performance trophy for his role as a Mississippi attorney in the courtroom drama, A Time to Kill. MTV's own Beavis and Butt-head, the animated stars of Beavis and Butt-head do America, lost in the best on- screen duo category to Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery for the tense action drama, The Rock.

Best kiss went to will Smith and Vivica A Fox for Independence Day, and British rockers Bush won best song for ``Machinehead'' from the movie, Fear. Bush performed at the ceremony, as did Jewel and En Vogue.

Winners of the awards were determined by a national poll of MTV viewers, who were able to cast their votes through a special phone line and through MTV online.
