Patil takes gold

Bangalore, June 8: Viraj Patil of Maharashtra clinched the gold in men high board diving smashing the National record at the Jayanagar pool in the fourth National Games here Sunday evening.

Viraj, who has benefitted a great deal fromhis training in the United States, logged 496.40 points as against the National record of 484.38 points standing in the name of Sumit Chaudhary.

John Siddique of Services won the silver with 484.04 and Umesh Prasad of Uttar Pradesh the bronze with 471.20, All three, fared better than the Games record of 466.25 points was set by B S Ravisehkar of Kerala in 1987.

In waterpolo, Maharashtra earned a hard-fought win over Kerala in the women's league match. Anuja Vartak scored the match-winner.

Kerala men made amends for the defeat when they beat Delhi 13-7. (K Jayachandra top scored with four goals while Parveen and Binu scored three apiece.
