In Brief -- Boat carrying rowing star capsizes

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

MUMBAI, June 8: Officials and sports lovers faced anxious moments when the boat carrying Kerala's star performer, V.O. Sunanda, participating in the individual sculls in the rowing event at Ulsoor Lake, capsized this morning. It took some time for the two-member rescue team to reach the spot and ``turn her over''. The incident happened when Sunanda apparently lost control of the boat while proceeding to the jetty to take part in her event. The rescue team, who were ashore, brought Sunanda ashore. Sunanda was administered salt water and recovered from the ordeal after being ``mentally upset'' for about an hour. Her individual event schedule was postponed to the later part of the day. Punjab protest over Sikdar

The Punjab contingent secretary has lodged a protest with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) over the controversial issue of international athlete Jyotirmayee Sikdar being allowed to represent Delhi in the athletics championship. Jyotirmayee, married to Punjab half-miler Avtar Singh and working in Calcutta, is running for Delhi instead of her husband's state even after a protest had been filed with the Games organisers. The Amateur Athletics Federation of India (AAFI) was charged with allowing Jyoti to run in the heats and in the finals of the women's 800m event -- in which she finished second representing Delhi -- before the AAFI had given a ruling on the protest lodged by Punjab.
