Quicktakes -- Gandhian Nahar dead


CALCUTTA: Bijoy Singh Nahar, veteran freedom fighter and close associate of Gandhiji and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, died at his central Calcutta residence today after a protracted illness. He was 91 and is survived by his son and two daughters, his wife having predeceased him. He had the rare opportunity to work with Netaji while being a councillor of the Calcutta municipal corporation during 1933-44. He also joined the Quit India Movement at the instance of Gandhiji.

AGARTALA: In a major achievement, the deployed army and paramilitary forces in Tripura have nabbed a total of 46 suspected militants from different areas during the past 48 hours. The combing operation and raids were conducted in connection with Tuesday's ambush by the outlawed NLFT insurgents that left 18 persons including seven security personnel dead and ten others injured.

Bangla fire

DHAKA: A devastating fire engulfed a gasfield in north-eastern Bangladesh today forcing hundreds to flee and injuring four, reports said. The fire which broke out at the main drilling site at 0130 local time (0100 IST) left a deep crater in the ground at the Magurchhara gas field in Moulavibazar, some 200 kms northeast of Sylhet.
