Multani trounces Sethi, enters semis

MUMBAI, June 15: Sonic Multani finally got the better of his Guru, trouncing the former billiards World Champion, Geet Sethi, 5-0 in the snooker quarter-finals of the third Alpic Om Agrawal Memorial Billiards and Snooker tournament.

Despite Sethi knocking in a break of 48, Multani won the first frame 69-58. Multani then went from strength to strength, piling up breaks of 58 (2nd frame), 46 (3rd), (102 4th) and, 39 and 28 (5th).

The best match of the day was between two foremer national champions, Alok Kumar of Punjab and Ashok Shandilya of Railways which the former won 5-3 after being down 0-3.

Alok Kumar had breaks of 39, 44, 47 and 52 in the second, fifth, seventh and eighth frames respectively while Shandilya had breaks of 31 and 38 in the first frame.

Briton Roxton Chapman and former National champion Siddharth Rao of Tamil Nadu will meet each other in the semi-finals of the here tomorrow.

In the quarter-finals today, Chapman drubbed Subhash Agrawal 5-0. He had breaks of 39, 31, 41 and 67 in the first, third, fourth and fifth frames respectivly. The talented Englishman won 78-24, 72-19, 74-31, 91-18, 93-0.

Agrawal, who was the semi-finalist in the World Amateur Billiards Championships, was totally out of depth and all that he could muster in form his highest break was 31 in the third frame.

Rao had a tough time beating another former national champion Sarang Shroff of Maharashtra 5-2. Rao had two good breaks of 39 and 40 in the first and fifth frames to notch-up a 78-18, 19-63, 75-39, 62-37, 69-31, 38-52, 84-71.
