England name unchanged squad for Lord's Test

REUTER

LONDON, June 15: England's selectors named an unchanged squad of 13 today for the second Ashes test against Australia starting at Lord's on Thursday.

Chairman David Graveney said he and fellow selectors Mike Gatting and Graham Gooch ``did not take very long'' confirming by telephone last night they wanted to keep the same squad.

Michael Atherton's team lead the six-match series 1-0 after winning the first Test at Edgbaston by nine wickets.

``This squad has been picked with the same principles as the first Test to cover all the options before we get to Lord's and see the pitch,'' said Graveney.

He said England's management were intending to make a decision on their final 11 on Tuesday so the two omitted players could be available for county championship duty the following day.

If all-rounder Adam Hollioake and left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell are again left out, England would be fielding the same 11 for the first time in 34 home Tests.

Ashley Cowan, Essex's uncapped paceman, is added to the squad for experience as England continue a policy they started by taking Surrey's promising fast bowler Alex Tudor to the Edgbaston Test preparations.

The squad is: Michael Atherton (Lancashire, captain), Mark Butcher (Surrey), Alec Stewart (Surrey), Graham Thorpe (Surrey), Nasser Hussain (Essex), John Crawley (Lancashire), Mark Ealham (Kent), Andy Caddick (Somerset), Darren Gough (Yorkshire), Robert Croft (Glamorgan), Devon Malcolm (Derbyshire), Adam Hollioake (Surrey), Phil Tufnell (Middlesex).

Also: Ashley Cowan, (Essex)
