India File -- First round bye for Anand

CHENNAI, June 21: Grandmasters Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov have been seeded directly into the semi-finals of the World Chess Championship to be played in Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from Jan 1 to 9 next year.

Meanwhile, PT Ummer Koya, Secretary All India Chess Federation and senior vice president of the FIDE informed that India's Viswanathan Anand, Boris Gelfand (Belarus), Valery Salov, Vladimir Kramnik (both Russia) and Jan Timman of the Netherlands, all former candidates to the world cycle have been given first round byes.

Fatal throw

JALANDHAR: Border Security Force (BSF) athlete Dhan Singh (28), died when hit accidentally by a hammer thrown by another athlete Manjit Singh on the BSF campus ground here last evening, police said.

The mishap occurred when he was practising along with others police added. Dhan Singh hailed from Churru in Rajasthan.
