Ministers face barrage of onions

AGENCIES

NAShIK, June 23: Agitated farmers pelted onions at two Maharashtra ministers at an all-party Shetkari mela at Yeola here on Sunday.

Fifteen Shetkari Sanghatana activists were arrested including the Sanghatana leader Chandrakant Gurav for allegedly throwing onions at Babanrao Gholap and Tukaram Dighole, police said.

The Shetkari Sanghtana activists have been demanding remunerative price of Rs 300 per quintal for onions.

Trouble erupted when Gurav stepped on to the dais and tried to disrupt the rally to be addressed by the ministers. When former congress MLA Marutirao Pawar asked Gurav not to disturb the rally, the farmers began throwing onions. Appealing to farmers to cooperate with the government, the ministers said steps would be taken to fulfil their demand.
