MUMBAI, June 23: Western Railway has recovered Rs 229 lakh in an intensive drive to check ticketless travel in the month of May, 1997. Over 2.02 lakh cases of ticketless travel, including unbooked baggage, were detected during the drive, a Western Railway release said here. Also, 1244 cases of ticket transfer were detected, resulting in the recovery of Rs 6.97 lakh from the defaulters.

Convocation

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Gandhi Institute of Computer Education & Information Technology will be holding its second convocation at the institute's premises on June 30 at 5.30 pm. Students who have passed their office assistant's course will be awarded certificates by Senator Larry Pressler of USA.

Heroin seized

Officers of Air intelligence unit at Sahar International Airport have seized heroin, gold and foreign currencies worth Rs 6.5 crore in the past week. On June 21, the officers intercepted a Nigerian passenger departing for Addis Ababa by an Ethiopian airline flight and seized six kgs of heroin concealed in the false bottom of his suitcase. This seizure is one of the biggest in recent times at Sahar Airport. The officers also intercepted an Indian passenger arriving from Kuwait by flight KU 301 and seized 25 gold bars of 10 tolas each concealed in his shoes. The gold is valued at Rs 13.50 lakh. In two other cases, one Indian and one Nepali passenger was intercepted and foreign currency worth 9.42 lakh was recovered.

Miss India

Miss India Worldwide show will be hosted by Nuances Communications, the TV production and Events management company floated by Shekhar Suman in September at Centaur Hotel. Dharmatma Sharan, a popular MC in USA will be compering the show. The show is being held in India to coincide with the completion of 50 years of Indian independence.
