CYS trounce SBI

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

TENACIOUS TUSSLE...An SBI player slides in an attempt to deprive Colaba Young Star possession.

June 23: The goals came in torrents at the Cooperage today. Colaba Young Star(CYS) lashed State Bank of India (SBI) 5-1 in a WIFA Senior Division football match after India Culture League (ICL) opened the floodgates to overturn a 0-2 deficitagainst Rizvi on the way to a 5-2 win in the Ist Division.

Diljinder Singh (two goals), Philip D'Costa and substitute Constanco Reberedo (one each) rattled SBI. The bankmen trailed 1-2 at the interval and were in the game till the last quarter.

But two goals in as many minutes by Diljinder and substitute Constancio Reberdero, followed by one in the closing minute by another sub Vikas Jadhav -- brought on a rout.

CYS were given a rousing start through the talented D'Costa who scored after just three minutes, running into the area and finding the net with an angular shot.

CYS and D'Costa were all over a hapless SBI but after the striker went close on two occasions, the bankmen struck the equaliser against the run of play.

Pramod Bird dropped the ball in the goalmouth and compounded the blunder in colliding with teammate Ashok Ghadi. Hasmukh Baria slotted home the loose ball to restore parity in the 37th minute.

After SBI went close, CYS struck a vital blow seconds before half-time -- Diljinder's angular shot squeezing through the gap between Roy and the post.

Diljinder broke SBI's resistance with a third as the bankmen capitulated. Philips, though, had his final say as he beat a defender to send in a clinical cross. Jadhav obliged with a header on the run.

Earlier, three goals by Rajesh Rane and two by Hekmat Singh helped ICL overrun Rizvi after Pascol Koli and Anthony George put Rizvi 2-0 up.
