Dias strikes it rich for Miners

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

DOUR DUEL...A tussle for possession between Income-Tax and Bombay Muslims in the WIFA Senior Division. The taxmen prevailed 3-1.

MUMBAI, June 25: Two goals by Savio Dias helped Miners Sports Club beat Young Challengers 2-0 in the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) Second Division league at the St Xavier's Ground, Parel, today.

Dias struck in the second half after playing second fiddle in the first session during which their goal was lucky to survive the threats of the Young Challengers forwards.

But crossing over, Miners got their act together. They changed tactics and pieced together some dangerous moves.

Miners' dominance was soon to pay off and Dias broke the deadlock. Accepting Sujit Salian's pass, Dias found the net, giving Sachin Bhosle in goal no chance.

Miners refused to retreat into defence after scoring and kept up the pressure. They should have swelled the lead but Suresh Nair and Salian shot wide when placed to score.

Miners were not to be denied a comfortable victory and Dias his second goal. A centre in the 57th minute by Kapil Rangraj on the left wing eluded fellow forward Suresh Nair but Dias was at hand to slot home from close range.
