Easy wins for Kohli, Juneja

ALL CONCENTRATION...Shelock Melwani braces for a return in his 9-4, 9-7, 5-9, 6-9, 9-7 win over Suresh Shetty in the boy's u-19 event.

MUMBAI, June 25: Second Seed Amitpal Kohli and fifth seed Rohan Juneja moved into the second round of the under-19 boys' event in the Rs four-lakh Videocon squash tournament, here today.

Kohli blanked Vishwas Das 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 while Juneja had little dificulty in getting past Nitin Bhosle 9-1, 9-0, 9-3 in the first round. Juneid Nathani, however, was stretched to overcome Kshitij Nowahar 9-6, 4-9, 2-9, 9-3, 9-6 to join Kohli and Juneja in the second round.

Shalok Melvani beat Suraj Shetty to enter the second round in another under-19 encounter.

In a men's first-round clash, Cyrus Poncha got past Premal Javeri 9-0, 9-3, 9-7 while in a women's first-round encounter Jigisha Mehta edged past Sapna Jalan with a hard-fought 9-4, 8-10, 9-4, 5-9, 10-8 victory.

In two other women's opening-round matches, Farida Tata eliminated Nisrat Madraswala 9-1, 9-5, 9-7 and Supriya Balsekar beat Rashna Patnaik 9-5, 9-3, 7-9, 9-4.

Other results: Boys u-19 (1st round): Mihir Kapoor bt Soni Juneja 9-1, 9-2, 9-0; Ajay Sharma bt Bipin Batra 9-0, 9-5, 5-9, 9-1; Tushar Bambani bt Kunil Jani 9-5, 9-2, 9-4.

Professionals (1st round): P Darekar bt Vijay Sonavane 10-8, 9-7, 9-7; Dashrath Tambe bt Ajaz Mohammed 9-1, 9-6, 9-2; Vijay H Sonavane bt BG Ligam 9-6, 9-3, 9-6; Kisha Tambe bt N Sonavane 9-7, 9-5, 9-7.

BANSODE RALLIES: Sachin Bansode rallied to beat Arun Deshpande 8-17, 25-15, 25-0 to make the second round of the Kshatriya Union Club Open carrom tournament sponsored by Bank of India and Union Bank of India, today.

Another fightback saw Pravin Kamble beat Nandakumar Mhatre 0-25, 25-6, 25-18 in another first-round match.

The three-game struggles continued with CS Salunke beating Kadir Khan 25-6, 20-23, 21-16 and Deepak Halia and Laxman Boricha carrying on the pattern.Halia advanced at the expense of Suhas Rane 25-5, 2-25, 25-8 while Boricha did it the hard way, coming from behind to oust Narendra Gupte 7-17, 25-15, 25-10.
