BJP demands final word on Sarkaria panel report
UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
JAIPUR, June 25: Chief Ministers of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra and Rajasthan today gave an ultimatum to the centre to implement the recommendations of the Sarkaria Commission by December 31. The ultimatum was contained in the `Jaipur Resolution' adopted at the one-day conference of Chief Ministers of states ruled by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies. It was convened by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat here. The conclave authorised Shekhawat to contact Chief Ministers of other states to build pressure on the centre to implement the recommendations. The resolution however did not specify the action plan if the centre did not comply. Briefing mediapersons at the conclusion of the meeting, Shekhawat said the commission had submitted its recommendations about eleven years back but the centre had not implemented these. There was consensus among chief ministers that the misuse of Article 356 by the centre to bring down elected governments should be stopped. Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal demanded scrapping of the article. The resolution observed that the issue was important and other states should also put up a forceful demand. Shekhawat said the implementation of the Sarkaria Commission would fulfil their demand up to some extent. Copyright © 1997 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
