Ramnath Goenka Foundation:Larry Pressler Lecture

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICEÎNEW DELHI, June 25: Senator Larry Pressler will deliver the first Ramnath Goenka Memorial Lecture in the Capital tomorrow. Pressler, who introduced in the US Senate the Pressler Amendment that blocked the US supply of arms to Pakistan, will speak on Breaking the India-Pakistan Impasse.

Scholar and politician, Pressler, 55, was a member of the House of Representatives from 1975 to 1979 and a Senator from 1979 to 1996. A graduate from Harvard Law School, he has been actively watching and analysing the politics and strategic affairs of the subcontinent.

He is one of the foremost experts on South Asia to emerge from the Capitol Hill.

``The first Ramnath Goenka Memorial Lecture, in a way, coincides with the Foreign Secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan. At a time when both the countries are looking for solutions to outstanding issues, the views of Senator Larry Pressler who has initiated a meaningful debate on the subcontinental impasse become increasingly relevant,'' says Vivek Goenka, Chairman, Ramnath Goenka Memorial Foundation and Trust.

The foundation was set up in 1992 in memory of late Shri Ramnath Goenka, founder of The Indian Express, freedom fighter and doyen of Indian journalism, to encourage and propagate high-quality, objective journalism.

Apart from a series of lectures to raise the level of debate on issues of national interest, the foundation plans to launch training programmes and scholarships for young journalists and institute a national award for investigative reporting.

The first Ramnath Goenka Memorial Lecture will be held at 5 pm at Godrej Auditorium, WWF Building (Near India International Centre), Lodi Estate, New Delhi. Nani Palkhivala will preside over the function.
