Fitness fare for Mumbai cops

PUNE, June 29: The Mumbai and Pune police that have had a healthy dose of crash fitness programmes over the last three years, conducted by doctors Deepak and Seema Rao, Pune based fitness and rehabilitation consultants, who are now geared to give the Mumbai police a swinging time, with the `Aerobic Kickboxing' series to be conducted from July 4.

To be held at the Bombay Police Club in South Mumbai from July 4 to July 6, this new kind of aerobics which Rao claims is being used for the first time in the country, comprises of high-level exercises.The exercises which are a powerful combination of aerobics, kicking and boxing techniques, will be taught to the first batch of 50-odd police officials of Mumbai for two hours everyday,for three days. Then, says Dr. Deepak Rao, ``The basic exercises which last for nine minutes will have to be practised by the trained cops for the rest of their lives, to keep up the fitness spree that is sure to make them physically and mentally alert for their demanding jobs.''

Dr. K Venkatesh, Deputy Police Commissioner, Special Branch, Mumbai, informed The Indian Express that the first batch of 50 cops from the Special Branch, Mumbai comprising of officers as well as constables will embark upon this novel programme on July 4. These cops do a kung-fu in the same breath as they swerve to the music of aerobic exercises, Dr.Deepak Rao says, ``We have taken select movements from boxing and karate disciplines which will be practised in tune to music in such a rhythm that the body's aerobic system is turned on.''
