Nelson Mandela's bust stolen

DUBLIN: A bronze bust of South African president Nelson Mandela has been stolen from a public park in Dublin, police said. Mandela is due to arrive in Britain on Friday for a four-day official visit.

Happily married men live longer

WASHINGTON: A happily married man adds more years to his life than a woman in the same situation, a new report says. Using a table put together by a medical specialist, the June 30 issue of Newsweek magazine invites readers to calculate how long they will live using more than a dozen factors including age, gender, amount of fat consumed, blood pressure, and marital status.

Among people between ages of 20 and 59, a happily married man adds two years to his life. At the same time, a happily married woman increases her life by only one year.

Elephant fast food

BANGKOK: Six Thai elephants gave a big trunks-up to the first packaged food developed to substitute the rapidly disappearing plants they usually eat, according to a zoo official.

The elephants at Bangkok's Dusit zoo ate with gusto when fed for several months with chewable tablets made of concentrated sugar cane, corn, molasses, vitamins and minerals, said Alongkorn Mahannop, the zoo's director on Monday. The half-kilogram inch-long tablets, developed by researchers at Bangkok's Kasetsart university and the Dusit zoo, will soon be tested in other zoos and in the country's northern jungles, according to Alongkorn.
