Oliver 'tricks in Cafe Royal win

July 1: Cafe Royal virtually had a feast of Fidalgo, Kajuwadi in an MDFA third division League match, scoring eight goals against them at the St. Xavier's ground, Parel today. Keenan Oliver, who had a tally of four goals in the rout, scored the second, third and fourth goals for a hat-trick. G Neville opened the scoring with Leroy Nunes netting the fifth and sixth goals. Francis Pereira rounded off the tally. Speaking to reporters yesterday, Satish Pradhan, President of the organising committee and Rajya Sabha member, said ``this year, being the golden jubilee year of Indian independence, we have increased the prize money for the winners in different sections''. The winner of the men's race, one of the longest marathon (distance: 43 kms) in the country, would be richer by Rs 50,000 or a suzuki motorbike while the women's winner would take home Rs 25,000 or a TVS Scooty plus Rs 5,000, he said. He said many runners of international repute from Services, Railways and Police would take part in the marathon which would be treated as a preparatory work for the Asian Games. Govt. support Maharashtra revenue minister, Narayan Rane has said squash professionals would get all support from the State government in respect of awards and housing facilities on par with other sportspersons. Speaking as chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of the Videocon Squash Classic last night, Rane said the government would help promote the game to international standards. Chairman of the Indian Squash Professionals (ISP) and Collector of Sindhudurg, Vijay Kumar Gautam said ISP was planning to build a sports complex in the megapolis and sought the State government's assistance for the purpose.
