The sudden and ruthless sacking of Joginder Singh adds another ugly chapter to the history of intrigue in the CBI. That this sensitive investigating agency lent itself as an instrument of prime ministerial politics, most recently during the terms of Narasimha Rao and Deve Gowda, is common knowledge.

Nothing creditable
The performance of the credit rating agencies seems to be getting worse day by day. The country's top rating agency, Crisil, has downgraded ITC Classic Finance's non-convertible debenture and fixed deposit schemes -- they are now classified as having "inadequate safety" -- on the same day the company posted huge losses which have nearly wiped out its entire net worth.
