Haile storm
OSLO, July 5: Haile Gebrselassie recaptured his world 10,000 metre record in
emphatic fashion at the Bislett Games here on Friday and then vowed there
was still more to come.
The 24-year-old Olympic champion, who admitted before the race that winning
back the record he lost last year to Moroccan Salah Hissou was more
important than winning at the world championships in Athens next month,
clocked 26 mins 31.32 secs.
Mohammed Mourhit (Belgium) , finished a distant second in 26:31.32.
America's new sprint queen Marion Jones won the 100m here, beating out
fellow American Gail Devers. Running in perfect weather conditions, Johnson
won the 110m hurdles.
Freeman, the Olympic silver medalist, won the women's 400 in 49.39. In the
weakened 100m race Frankie Fredericks beat his training partner Linford
Christie in an unimpressive 10.11. Canada's Donovan Bailey, the 100m Olympic
champion and world record-holder, switched to the 200 and won in a
wind-aided 20.14. Geir Moen of Norway finished runner-up in 20.23.
