Over 17,000 people carry malarial parasite

PURULIA: Over 17,000 people in Purulia district are carrying the dreaded malarial parasite in their blood, according to the district's deputy Chief medical officer of health, Dr Asit Biswas. Speaking at a seminar on eradication of malaria,organised jointly by the Indian Medical Association (Purulia unit) and the district science centre, Dr Biswas blamed the poor quality of spray, lack of supervision and inadequate community involvement as the main drawbacks of the malaria eradication programme.

BSF personnel nab militants

AGARTALA: Border Security Force (BSF)jawans are interrogating five suspected militants, who were nabbed on Saturday while entering west Tripura's Sonamura sub-division from Bangladesh. Official sources said here that Bangladeshi and Pakistani currencies, a diary containing phone numbers of many countries, incriminating documents, batteries and wires were recovered from the youths.

DD building catches fire

NEW DELHI: A minor fire broke out on the fifth floor of the Doordarshan (DD) building on parliament street here today. The fire was put out in ten minutes. Fire brigade sources said the fire broke out in a switch board in room 512. There was no major damage. DD was showing the Orissa rath yatra when the fire occured. 10 killed in collision JAIPUR: Ten people were killed and one injured in a collision between a jeep and bus near Reengus in Sikar district on the Jaipur-Sikar road today, police said here. The injured were admitted to the SMS hospital here.
