Mumbai beat -- CM orders demolitions

CM orders demolitions

Chief Minister Manohar Joshi announced the immediate demolition of all illegal constructions which have come up in the metropolis after January 1, 1995.

Talking to reporters after the traditional tea party, Joshi said the decision would come into immediate effect for those illegal constructions which are being carried out even after the announcement of the scheme. While those constructions which sprung up during and after 1995, which add up to around 40-45 lakh, would be demolished after the monsoons, the Chief Minister said. It was not possible for the government to allow all the illegal slums rising in the city and as a result orders have been given to all, not to disturb any official doing the demolition work.

One hurt in bldg collapse

One person was injured when the rear portion of the four-storeyed `Motawala' building near the Parsi Agiary in Kalbadevi, south Mumbai, collapsed early today in the wake of torrential showers.

Fire brigade sources said the injured was hospitalised. This is the second building collapse in the area after the `Ganesh' building came down there last week, leaving three dead and five injured, two seriously.

Efforts were still on to recover a body believed trapped in the rubble of the `Ganesh' building, sources said.
