July 6: Over 50 lakh commuters will have to pay more for their bus travel if the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) committee which meets tomorrow approves the proposal of the BEST general manager to increase the fares.

At present the commuters pay Rs 2 for every 2.5 km range. The civic administration has decided to hike the fare by 50 paise for ordinary buses and Re one for limited buses on the present fare. The likely increase in fares follows the recent revision in the pay scales and gradation of the employees which has led to a burden of Rs 84 crore on the BEST undertaking.The BEST administration has also circulated another proposal for the revision of electricity tariff.
