New emission norms soon

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU

NEW DELHI, July 7: The Ministry of Surface Transport (MoST) has decided to issue next week the revised emission norms for vehicles manufactured on or after April 1, 2000. It has called a secretary-level meet on July 16 to take a decision on the objections raised by leading auto manufacturers.

The new emission norms are proposed to be inserted into the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 through a notification.

Ministry sources said the meet, to be attended by officials of the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Surface Transport, Law, Environment and Forests and Industry, would evaluate the suggestions made by auto manufacturers in response to the draft rules notified by the government on March 18. These ministries have already given in principle approval to the draft Central Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Rules, 1997. Auto giants Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, Royal Enfield Motor Ltd and Greaves Ltd - had sought changes in the emission standards.
