[Details] The Prime Minister has a justified reputation for being able to wear down the opposition of the most unlikely persons. He has also shown that when it comes to basic principles he is ready to stand up and be counted. He has benefitted both from getting along and from standing up.

[Details] Whither the UF? Will it unravel like a piece of knitting or manage to weather the storm as it has done many others. As always, the UF's destiny does not lie in its own hands, but in those of its main prop. The Congress and its assessment of its own chances of coming to power will continue to put its stamp on Indian politics.

[Details] Last month, Congress `delegates' chose Sitaram Kesri as their party leader by an overwhelming majority. While the votes were being counted, however, the president-to-be was not waiting in silence with frayed nerves and jerky tics shaking his octogenarian frame. Reports say that he was so supremely confident as to expound the difference between political cultures within the Congress.
