Gujral permits Jamir to attend American meet

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

NEW DELHI, July 19: Overruling the Ministry of Home Affairs, Prime Minister I K Gujral has cleared Nagaland Chief Minister S C Jamir's trip to the United States to attend a conference of some Naga insurgents, organised by the Baptist Church.

Addressing a press conference here yesterday, Jamir said the Prime Minister cleared the trip after he convinced him that the conference, which will be attended by the two insurgent groups -- National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) and Federal Group, is a ``genuine attempt at seeking peace in the region''.

As reported earlier by The Indian Express, Jamir had been advised not to attend the conference by the Home Ministry.
