BUENOS AIRES, July 23: Argentina's footballers began what was likely to be a very short-lived strike today to call for six Deprotivo Espanol players to be free to transfer to other clubs.

But Argentine Football Association (AFA) officials said they trusted the government would order both sides to begin a period of compulsory negotiations to end the dispute.
