Mumbai Beat -- Joshi to persuade Ingle
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, July 23: Chief Minister Manohar Joshi will himself persuade deputy commissioner of police Vasant Ingle to withdraw his resignation. In the wake of the death of 11 dalits in police firing and to protest against the Sena-BJP government's `indifferent' attitude towards dalits, Ingle had sought voluntary retirement from service. ``I will urge not only Ingle, but all the dalits not to take such an extreme step. I will also ask the concerned departments to look into complaints lodged by Ingle under the Scheduled Caste (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against senior police officials,'' Joshi told mediapersons. BMC plea on Khairnar The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today filed an appeal in the Bombay High Court challenging its earlier order on reinstatement of dismissed deputy municipal commissioner G R Khairnar. The appeal would come up for hearing before Chief Justice M B Shah and Justice Ranjana Desai sometime next week. On July 4, Justice R M Lodha of the high court had set aside a BMC resolution dismissing Khairnar from service and ordered his reinstatement with all benefits. The judge had observed that the resolution passed by BMC's general body on October 10 last was perverse and not tenable in law. The court, however, held that stoppage of two increments to the officer for leaving city limits without the permission of the Municipal Commissioner was legal. The high court held that it was not proper to rake up old cases against him alleging that he violated laws while demolishing illegal structures.
