Mumbai Notes -- Gastro toll rises to 34

MUMBAI, July 23: The total number of deaths in Mumbai due to gastro-enteritis rose to 34 with the death of 62 year-old Ahuja Biharilal at Nair hospital today. Biharilal was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday in a critical condition. According to the BMC, 6,194 persons are being treated for the disease at various civic hospitals in the city since June 5. While 1,972 new cases have been registered, 1,839 patients have been discharged after treatment.

NFB demand

The blind in the state feel that they have been let down. They complained that Chief Minister Manohar Joshi's promise to immediately come out with an announcement on the demands made by the National Federation for the Blind on July 10, has not yet been met. The association had organised a morcha on July 10, which was attended by the blind from all over the state. They demanded that the chief minister should come and address them personally. Later, representatives of the association met Joshi who promised them that their demands will be looked into and implemented immediately.

Blood camp

On the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, a blood donation and medical checkup camp was organised by the Mumbai division of the Insurance Workers Organisation. More than 100 employees participated in the the blood donation camp, inaugurated by the chief of the Nana Paralkar Smriti Samiti, Dr Madhavrao Palkar Smriti Samiti, while N C Sharma Executive Director of LIC was the chief guest.

Service camp

Tangerine Express is organising a free Compaq notebook service camp upto July 26 at all Tangerine outlets in the city where owners can have their notebooks serviced or repaired free of charge. Compaq users can bring their notebooks along with proof of purchase to the Tangerine Compaq care centre, Nariman Pt.

MSc formspApplication forms for the new MSc degree course on Biotechnology are available from the university's Finance and Accounts department at its Fort and Santacruz campuses between July 23 and July 30 (working days only) on payment of Rs 50 in cash. The eligibility for the course is a BSc from university of Mumbai with 55 per cent marks. The selected candidates will be required to pay a total of Rs 15,405.

Contact centres

All the 17 contact centres that were giving informations on admission in the city will transform into admission centres for three days from today to fill up vacancy for standard XI, informed the deputy director of education J M Abhayankar. The forms are to be availed of submitted to these admission centres.
