Neelam Singh breaks National discuss mark

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

NEW DELHI, July 25: Neelam Singh smashed the National women's discus record for the second time in a week with a heave of 55.72 metres and Shakti Singh bagged a men's shot put-discus double to lead the show in the first Domestic Athletic Meet at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium today.

Neelam Singh, the 26-year-old Kapurthala-based athlete, capped her consistent series of heaves with a third try of 55.32 metres, which bettered the mark of 54.56m set at Birmingham on July 19 during the Indian squad's just-ended competition trip to London.

The National Games winner who has totally dominated the event in the last two seasons, then sent the circle to 55.72m in her fifth try to peg the mark further. Railway teammate Sugan Yadav touched 50.52m in her final try to finish second.

National camper Parvinder Singh hurled the javelin to a fine 72.38m under enveloping darkness in another good show at the meet. Satbir Singh's national mark stands at 75.22m.

Double national mark holder Shakti Singh coolly won both the shot put and discus, while top quartermiler Paramjeet Singh clocked a comparatively slower 48.29 seconds to win the first of the two 400 metres races, run on a time trial basis.

Woman middle-distance runner Rosa Kutty, bound for the Athens World Meet with Shakti Singh and Paramjeet, kept up her good form seen in London by outpacing main rival Jyotirmoy Sikdar to win the 800m at 2:02.63 secs.

Amit Khanna of Delhi kept his recent status as national 100m record holder by powering away in the last 40 metres to claim the short sprint. Khanna, who clocked 10.54 sec at the Bangalore National Games in June for the mark, however timed a slow 10.70 seconds today.
