Courier packs off Bhupathi

REUTER

LOS ANGELES, July 25: India's Mahesh Bhupathi crashed out of the $303,000 Infiniti Open going down to sixth seed Jim Courier in the prequarter-final yesterday.

Qualifier Mahesh Bhupathi, a surprise mixed doubles winner in the French Open this year, fought gallantly against his fancied opponent before conceding the match 6-7 (5-7), 3-6.

Goran Ivanisevic, back from a two-week yachting holiday, continued to cruise despite the effects of a bad stomach. The top-seed reeled off 12 aces to sail past 125th-ranked Frenchman Olivier DeLaitre 7-5 7-6 (7-2) to move into the quarter-finals.

Nearly sinking from contention was former Wimbledon champion and two-time Los Angeles winner Richard Krajicek, who barely survived with a 7-5 5-7 7-6 (7-5) win over 21-year-old rookie Glenn Weiner.
