CII-PM meet to revive sagging industrial growth

NEW DELHI, Aug 4: Prime Minister I K Gujaral, in the course of a 75-minute meeting with a CII delegation on Monday, evaluated the impact of measures initiated by the government to revive economic and industrial growth, especially in the infrastructure sector.

The discussion focussed on the decline in industrial growth rate in the first quarter of 1997-98. The team of businessmen assured the PM that there was hope for a revival in the industrial growth rate in September-October, 1997.

The CII delegation comprised of Ratan Tata, Jamshyd Godrej, Rahul Bajaj, and Shekhar Datta. N Kumar, president, CII, Rajesh Shah, vice-president and CII director-general Tarun Das also attended the meeting.

The team of industrialists emphasised that speedy action was necessary to bring about improved preparation, planning and transparency of infrastructure projects. It was also necessary to avoid mid-term revision of terms of the projects which further delayed their implementation.
