India invited for World Youth Games MUMBAI: India have been invited to take part in the tennis event of next July's World Youth Games by the Russian Tennis association. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) would consider the Russian Association's request and also the proposal to send a national squad to Australia for the January 3-6 junior Hopman Cup tournament at its executive committee meeting in Indore on August 29. The executive committee would also consider a proposal to give financial assistance to Indian players, decide venues for the 1998 Satellite Circuit and consider amendments in rules and regulations of its constitution before recommending the same to the Annual General Meeting scheduled for the next day. Giving these details AITA secretary Ramesh Desai also said he was yet to receive any response from his predecessor PL Reddy to the letter written by him regarding the Chennai and Ahmedabad Challengers allotted to Reddy by the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tour. Judokas do well NEW DELHI: Indian judokas won nine medals, including four gold in the Indonesia International Judo Championship which concluded in Jambi on Sunday. According to information received by the Judo Federation of India (JFI), all the eight players representing the country won the medals with Poonam Chopra claiming two (a gold and a bronze). Indians in all bagged four gold, two silver and three bronze medals. In men's, Olympian Narinder Singh and Prashant Verma clinched a gold each in the 60 kg and 65 kg respectively. In the women section Meeta Sharma (52kg) and Poonam (61 kg) won the titles. Yashpal Solanki (78 kg) and Jyotinder Kaur (56 kg) claimed a silver each in men's and women section. Najib aga was placed third in the 71 kg, while in women section Kamla Rawat came third in 48 kg category and Poonam Chopra in open category won a bronze each. Doherty coming NEW DELHI: World snooker champion Ken Doherty would be the star attraction at the Blue Star Golden Cue event to be held here this month. The Blue Star Golden Cue event would be played over four days and three tables. The event carries a prize money of $ 33,000 to be paid by World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA).
