Pargat Singh wants seniors back in team

UNITED NEWS AGENCY

NEW DELHI, Aug 4: The new national hockey coach Pargat Singh has expressed his unhappiness over the dropping of some senior players and said that he will make efforts to get them back in the squad.

Pargat, who was appointed national coach on Saturday, told TVL in an interview that he will ask IHF to recall these players. ``I require services of all the players. I have to get them back. They have been playing for a long time now and their experience will benefit Indian hockey.'' But Pargat cautioned that these players have to be fit.

``Right now I can only experiment with the raw team,'' Pargat said. ``May be after three or four tournaments I will be in a position to say anything,'' he added.

Commenting on the Indian hockey team, the former Indian skipper said ``Basic weakness of the team is penalty corner conversion, goalkeeping and scoring by the forwards.'' Explaining reasons for India's poor penalty corner conversion, Pargat said that the players lacked speed.

Pargat, himself a penalty corner specialist, said: ``My hits were at a speed of 165 kilometre per hour whereas dutch striker Bovelander does it (takes hit) at 220 kilometre per hour. This makes all the difference. To improve speed we need strength and that takes a lot of time and proper attention.
