10% industrial growth in April

NEW DELHI, AUG 8: The current financial year has begun with a near 10 per cent industrial growth on the strength of a hefty 11.7 per cent increase in manufacturing sector during April 1997.

While mining sector recorded a five per cent growth, electricity sector was up by 3.6 per cent, an official release quoting the quick estimate of index of industrial production said.

Thirteen of the 17 industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of April 1997, as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) data revealed.

Basic metal and alloys industries have shown the highest growth of 47.3 per cent, followed by 25.2 per cent for the electrical machinery and parts. On the other hand food products have shown a negative growth of (-) 14.8 per cent while the chemical products showed a growth of (-) 3 per cent.
