Vikrant, Vaswani register easy wins to meet in semifinals
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Aug 7: Behzaad Devadhvala played two quarter-final singles matches with contrasting results. He had no trouble in the first one, as Ankur Jalpota conceded after trailing 11-15, 0-7 in the boy's singles match. In the men's quarters of the Greater Mumbai District Badminton Tournament at the CCI courts today, however, Devadhvala ran into third seed Manohar Kanchwade who won a stirring battle 18-15, 9-15, 15-5. Top seed Vikrant Patwardhan, second seed Vivek Gautam, fourth seed Kunal Vaswani and women's top seed Asawari Patwardhan went through the motions of winning their matches with ease. Vikrant Patwardhan looked bored at times while beating the slightly amused Harshad Tawade 15-3, 15-0 in 14 minutes. The top seed had to work very little while toying with his opponent. In fact, the few points that Tawade managed to win drew applause from the small gathering. Vikrant Patwardhan's semi-final opponent met with some resistance but in the end was too good for his opponent. Vaswani defeated Anil Raikundalia 15-5, 15-7 in just 33 minutes. The fourth seed was just too fast and sharp for Raikundalia in the first game which lasted 12 minutes. Raikundalia, who had a tough three game match yesterday against Bharat Bhosale, lacked in speed to match his speedier opponent. Raikundalia, however, played a much better second game in which Vaswani seemed to have become slightly complacent. There were two brilliant rallies when Vaswani was leading 6-3. This was the only moment in the match when Raikundalia could match Vaswani point for point. Once the two points ended, so did Raikundalia's challenge . Gautam won in straight games, 15-11, 15-9 while Asawari Patwardhan had an easier time defeating Hitali Shah without conceding a point.
